Central Project Z02:
Data management and integration

Brief Summary

This Collaborative Research Centre (CRC) uses a wide range of data sets from laboratory and field experiments commonly providing data as time series to idealised and comprehensive model simulations, and reanalysis data providing four dimensional gridded data sets of the atmosphere at dedicated time steps.  Enabling the efficient exchange, storage and publication of these data sets is a challenge in itself. Compiling a dataset that allows an analysis involving several of these different datasets is another. This project will address all of these issues.

An important part of this project is to provide data management guidelines on how to store and make data available. In addition, members of the CRC, especially but not exclusively early career researchers, need training in the use of data management tools. Support and hands-on training will be provided on an ongoing basis as part of this project.

Within the CRC we use a git-based code repository for version control. We also have a community on zenodo for data publication and a data archive at JGU Mainz. For fast data exchange and analysis between individual members of the CRC, we offer the use of a Linux-based server. The project provides continuous support and maintenance of these products.

Furthermore, this project provides homogenised data sets for comprehensive data analysis as well as forecast and reanalysis data for field measurement campaigns. The homogenised data set has been previously compiled in project Z01 and will now be made more interactively accessible through a graphical user interface.

Finally, the measurement campaigns require forecasting tools. The Mission Support System has been set up in Mainz and is ready to provide meteorological forecasts for ongoing field projects. A second instance of these tools will be operated by this project to allow for retrospective analysis of previous field campaigns using reanalysis data.

Joint campaign database with around 16 000 flight hours. The map shows the spatial distribution of the flights, each campaign in a different color. The profiles show the data density in 5° and 10 K bins.
